The Art of Happiness: Lessons from Meditations by Marcus Aurelius
Hello,
Welcome to Growth Digest, a newsletter about personal development and self-help books. In this issue, we will explore Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, one of the most influential books on Stoic philosophy.
Meditations is a collection of private thoughts written by Marcus Aurelius, the Roman emperor from 161 to 180 A.D. He wrote these reflections to himself as a way of practising Stoicism, a school of philosophy that teaches how to live with logic, virtue, and harmony.
Some of the key lessons from Meditations are:
Remember your rational nature: You have the power to control your thoughts and emotions, and to act according to reason and justice. Don’t let external events or other people disturb your peace of mind.
“You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”
Be grateful for what you have: Everything that happens to you is part of a divine plan that works for the good of the whole. Appreciate the gifts of nature and the gods, and don’t complain about what you lack or what you can’t control.
“Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them.”
Live in the present: Don’t dwell on the past or worry about the future. Focus on what you can do right now, and make the best use of your time and energy. Life is short and unpredictable, so make every moment count.
“When you arise in the morning think of what a privilege it is to be alive, to think, to enjoy, to love …”
Be kind to others: Everyone is part of a larger community, and everyone shares a common rational nature. Treat others as you would like to be treated, and don’t judge them harshly. Help them when you can, and forgive them when they err.
“Accept the things to which fate binds you, and love the people with whom fate brings you together, but do so with all your heart.”
